(PRWEB) February 21, 2005 -- In an innovative surprise announcement, Thomas Tevana's management has released his first single "Whoever You Want Me To Be" for radio airplay only, in select markets outside of the U.S., prior to its regional release later in the year.
"We had wanted to see what kind of a response we would get if we were to make such a move. We have been very strategic and careful not to be overzealous in our marketing, but there exists a possibility that the release date might be moved up. Thomas has an incredibly unique sound and an amazing gift for songwriting which not only Americans but the entire South Asian community all over the world should be proud of," his manager said from New York.
The song was produced by Steve Skinner, credited alongside Ric Wake with launching the careers of Taylor Dayne and Celine Dion's English language debut and subsequent albums; and recorded at Nervous Music Studios in New York City.
"I don't think I will ever stop being grateful to Ric Wake for guiding me to Steve Skinner," Tevana said. "None of this would have been possible without Steve's suavity and endurance on this. I was just a kid with my hat on, shlepping up and down Fifth Avenue trying to get a break."
Also an actor, Tevana is currently on a promotional tour across the South Asian Sub-Continent and the Middle East and the single launched it's airplay there today, coinciding with Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. John McCain's visit to the region, on City FM 89, Pakistan's first radio station primarily focused on Western and English music. Tevana will himself be sitting in the spotlight as a guest on the station's broadcast of "The Sohail Hashmi Breakfast Show" on Friday morning.
"We are living in a global economy and the world is getting smaller and smaller, so it seemed like a very natural choice to start radio airplay here," he said. "I arrived here contemplating the album's release outside of the U.S. and it soon became apparent that FM Radio was a craze sweeping through the region. Sohail Hashmi is from the UK himself and we hit it off immediately when we were introduced. I certainly think there is much this station can do because of its avant-garde approach. I myself would be considered more underground or niche here whereas in the US and Europe, my songs would be classified pure pop, so it will be interesting to see where this leads."
"FM Radio in the region is in a great position to help towards the growth and improvement of the music scene in the Asian Sub-Continent, while also promoting tolerance toward western cultures and music," he added. "They play everything from Frank Sinatra to Beyoncé and all else in between. I mean, they're playing a lot of the Top 40 music I just heard in New York. And this is all in addition to the talented young musicians out there who have so much potential but lose out to all the ‘branded’ singers, so I'm excited to be able to be a part of this cultural revolution taking place in this part of the world; and also at this time, when stations like MTV Desi and American Desi TV are launching back home."
A native of San Francisco and a resident of New York, Thomas Tevana is soon to appear alongside Sunny Deol in the much anticipated Bollywood film "Jo Bole So Nihaal" which was shot entirely in the US, also releasing this summer; and returns to Los Angeles to start principal photography in June on the recently announced "My Mother's Baby."
In responding to recent criticism about being a Desi foreigner working in the Bollywood arena, Tevana had simply answered "...Creative people rarely judge you for anything else but your talent. Every generation sees those who do something to keep their insurreptitious intentions alive, and this happens to be especially true in the creative community; even if we do it by contributing to a medium and conveying a message."
The single was also in the running for an American film soundtrack but management said nothing was yet confirmed.
