Gubernatorial Candidate Lynn Swann's 1974 Experience With Racism and Civil Rights

Brian Swann, brother of Hall of Fame football player Lynn Swann, gave a personal account of a 1974 encounter with the SFPD, which led to the Swann family filing a civil rights lawsuit against the city of San Francisco and their police department. This personal account has been included in the recently published ebook, "White Male Privilege: The Transition From Exclusion To Inclusion" written by Mark Rosenkranz.

(PRWEB) March 7, 2005 -- On February 24th, 2005, Lynn Swann, a college football analyst for ABC-TV, filed the necessary paperwork to form a political committee to explore the possibility of Swann running as the GOP nominee for Governor of Pennsylvania in 2006.

In 2001, the Pro Football Hall of Fame finally inducted Lynn Swann --- one of the Pittsburgh Steelers most favorite receivers after a very long and agonizing wait. He was a valued part of the Steelers football club as they went on to win four Superbowls in six years during the 1970's (IX, X, XIII and XIV).

Flashback to 1974 --- fame cannot prevent one from becoming a victim of racist behavior. Shortly after the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Swann in the first round of the 1974 draft, the 22-year-old, his two brothers, and a cousin, were assaulted and arrested by two San Francisco police officers investigating the Zebra Murders. Four black Muslim men were later convicted of the crimes and in 1976 sentenced to life for the 15 killings in 1973-74.

After the Swann family members were acquitted of the charges filed against them, the Swann's filed a lawsuit against the city of San Francisco and the police department for the violation of their civil rights. The Swann brothers and cousin won their suit.

Brian Swann's personal account of the 1974 encounter, with the San Francisco police department, has been included in an ebook that was readied for public distribution in January of 2005.

Mark Rosenkranz had interviewed Brian Swann in November of 2000 concerning his perspective on the idea of White Male Privilege. This interview along with seven others has been included in Mark's manuscript/ebook that is titled, "White Male Privilege: The Transition From Exclusion To Inclusion." Mark's ebook is now available for sale at:
