International Size Acceptance Association (ISAA) takes "Fat Actress" to task about show's mixed messages about obesity and acceptance.
New york City, NY (PRWEB) March 13, 2005 -- The International Size Acceptance Association (ISAA) is not amused by Fat Actress," Showtimes new comedy starring Kirstie Alley. After viewing the premiere episode, ISAA believes the show sends mixed messages to its viewers concerning weight and body image. For example, Alley herself perpetuates fat stereotypes of always eating, being clueless, slobbish and out of control. Alley uses fat-bashing language towards numerous plus-sized male actors, considers weight loss dieting and bulimic behavior while at the same time longing to be accepted at the size she is.
While ISAA understands that many people have conflicting feelings about their weight, Kirstie Alley is a well-known, well-liked celebrity and her actions influence people," said ISAAs Founder and Director Allen Steadham. People may relate to her weight struggle and desire for acceptance but then they see her endorse a diet program like Jenny Craig. People cant accept themselves while dieting, its contradictory."
This show doesnt appear to be very well thought out. It pursues the reckless, go-for-broke laugh over all else," Steadham said. In the context of self-esteem and body image, these mixed messages are potentially very damaging."
ISAAs core concept is called Respect Fitness Health" (RFH). ISAA believes that self-respect and healthy body concepts are critical to personal development and achievement, especially when coupled with physical fitness and learning to make healthy food choices, independent of ones size or weight.
ISAA wants to send a message to the people behind ‘Fat Actress," Steadham said. Be clear in what you are using this show to convey to the public and be consistent. You could do a lot of good or a lot of harm. ISAA would like to see ‘Fat Actress used to help people instead of focusing on the angst of being fat."
ISAAs mission is to promote size acceptance and to help end weight-based discrimination throughout the world by means of advocacy and visible, lawful actions.
