CLEVELAND, OH (PRWEB) March 21, 2005 -- Andrew M. Colarik, PhD, an information security consultant, speaker and author on cyber terrorism and information warfare, today announced there will be a discussion on the use of cyber space by terrorists at NOTACON in Cleveland, Ohio on Friday April 8th at 5 pm. This years NOTACON will focus on how technology and community intermingle.

After the September 11th attacks, the U.S. government has instituted programs to provide information analysis and infrastructure protection. One area of concern is the use of cyber space by terrorists to communicate, coordinate activities between terrorist cells, gather intelligence on potential targets, and disrupt and/or disable computer networks as a force multiplier prior to a physical attack. This presentation will introduce this emerging threat and be used as a forum for community awareness.

"It is critical to understand that todays terrorists have shown a consistent capability and willingness to turn our own technologies against us" said Dr. Colarik. Through the use of current telecommunication technologies, cyber terrorists can access critical systems from remote locations around the world and turn these systems to their own destructive purposes."

In todays environment, we are all dependent on computer systems in some form. Computer networks are the backbone to power and water transmission, as well as financial and governmental systems such as banking, credit and identity management" added Dr. Colarik. Imagine how your life would change if it was your identity that was used to rent the truck that blows up a federal building." The primary goal of this presentation is to raise public awareness about the threat of cyber terrorism and to create a community forum for discussing this emerging threat.

This talk is part of Dr. Colariks ongoing efforts to disseminate the need to secure cyberspace. His business, AndrewColarik.com, works with organizations as a business partner and advisor in assisting with specific needs in securing systems by providing effective policy advice, security audits, user education training, and the implementation of new security technology solutions.
