MEMtronics Receives Missile Defense Agency Contract for Tunable Filter Development

MEMtronics Corporation today announced it has received a research contract from the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) entitled MEMS Tunable Transmit Filters for MKV Applications."

(PRWEB) March 20, 2005 -- This contract is for the first phase of a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) project sponsored by the Department of Defense. This programs focus is on developing innovative microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices and circuits which uniquely support the requirements for tunable filters in transmit applications.

This six month contract will provide advances in the design of MEMS switches and circuits necessary for constructing MEMS-based tunable filters for use in military transmitter applications. Currently, most MEMS switches are designed for power levels on the order of one or two watts. Improvements in the mechanical and electrical design of these switches will improve the current and voltage handling capability such that tens of watts can be effectively handled. The target application for these switches is agile, electronically-tuned filters.

Teamed with MEMtronics on this project is Engineering Tecknowledgey Applications (ETA), a Fairfax, VA-based engineering consulting firm. ETA will support development of software-defined radio architectures which meet upcoming MDA needs. ETA and MEMtronics will collaborate to flowing down radio requirements and developing circuits which provide new levels of performance. These radio and filter architectures will be used to help prevent co-site interference of multiple transmitters in close proximity. These developments have a broad range of applicability, especially on unmanned air vehicles, where multiple transmitters and receivers are operating simultaneously.
