Product photo shoots are expensive, and while more and more pet accessories manufacturers are finding that patience, lots of treats, and some real begging comes with the territory, the new demand for high end pet products makes it all worthwhile.
Exton, PA (PRWEB) March 25, 2005 – The photo shoot was set for 9:00 a.m. – the products looked beautiful, the sets were stunning, and the lighting was perfect. Then the model walked in. Breathtakingly beautiful, but so difficult to work with! Always begging for a treat, and never happy unless she was sniffing everything, and everyone in sight. And after only a few shots completed, she laid down on one of the products and took a nap! Welcome to the trials of working with animals.
More and more entrepreneurs are finding how hard it is to work with animals, but they all say whatever it takes, its definitely worth it. According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA), the industry reached $35 billion in 2004 with steady growth projected to continue well into 2010. Well worth a little extra time and aggravation.
With a deadline looming, Joyce Reavey, designer and manufacturer of the upscale pet accessories brand Pawsitively Posh, clearly had to deal with this pampered and temperamental pup. I was worried," remembers Joyce. I had one day to shoot all of my new products for an upcoming brochure. The dogs owner didnt seem concerned, but every unproductive minute was money down the drain. So, I took action. I carefully moved the sleeping dog onto one of my newly designed pet pillows – she woke up, growled, and fell back asleep looking like an angel. The photographer started clicking – she got her nap, and I got my shots."
The APPMA says there are over 65 million dogs as of 2003 in the U.S., with sixty-two percent of all households now owning a pet - the highest level recorded. In fact, there are now more pets than people.
The fast growing market of high-end pet accessories can be attributed to a variety of trends. Spending in new luxury goods is increasing, dog ownership is increasing, and the psychology of pet ownership is changing. Young professionals, empty nesters, and couples without children are substituting a pet for a child, and are treated very much like family members. In fact, 83% of owners refer to themselves as their pets Mom or Dad, according to the American Animal Hospital Association's 2001 pet owners survey.
Joyce Reavey understands, and chalks difficult models" up to a days work in the pet industry. It was definitely an experience," laughs Joyce, but we did end up getting all of our shots, and I would do it all over again. After all, how many people can say they had to take a break from a photo shoot so their model could go outside and relieve herself?"
Pawsitively Posh products will be showcased at the upcoming H. H. Backer Annual Pet Trade Show in Atlantic City, April 1-3, 2005. Featured designs include a luxurious faux fur bed in the shape of a fluffy slipper, complete with a newspaper toy, and an awarding-winning pet bed inspired by a Faberge Egg – jewels and all.
