The Interpreter" touches on professional ethics for interpreters but it isnt a movie to learn about becoming a professional interpreter.
(PRWEB) April 28, 2005 -- Rapport International reports that Nicole Kidman clarifies the accuracy needed to be a good interpreter.
When questioned about her views of the targeted leader, Nicole Kidman tells secret service agent Sean Penn that shed like him gone." He asks for clarification – does she mean gone" or dead." She states that shed be out of a job as an interpreter if she misinterpreted the difference between gone" and dead."
Later in the movie, she seems to contradict the exactness needed for an interpreter by saying Thats not me" while looking at herself dressed like a guerilla rebel and carrying a gun. She explained by saying that the picture was of an isolated incident and that she doesnt believe in warfare for peace. Daily, professional interpreters confront communications issues of interpreting the words as they are said versus the cultural implications behind the words. A good interpreter balances the two to ensure clear communication.
Even though the movie The Interpreter" touched upon interpreting and professional ethics, it's not a movie that youd go see if you are considering a career in interpreting. But, I can recommend it as a good thriller for an enjoyable night out" says Wendy Pease, the Executive Director of Rapport International, a foreign language translation, interpretation and services firm and a 1997 graduate of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.
