Jim Wallis coming back to his hometown of Detroit on his book tour for God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It! The book is #8 on the New York Tiomes Best-Sellers list.

(PRWEB) May 5, 2005 -- God is not a Republican or Democrat: Jim Wallis brings this Message Home to Detroit. Solid and silver haired, Jim Wallis is coming back to his hometown of Detroit. The author of the highly acclaimed New York Times Bestseller, Gods Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesnt Get It, will lecture at the second annual Virgil L. Jones Lecture Series.

Wallis, a progressive evangelical, brings a message that doesnt fit neatly into either liberal or conservative orthodoxy, with fire and thunder Wallis proclaims God is not a Republican or a Democrat."

His message supplies religious language and biblical foundation for the bedrock beliefs that once inspired the Democratic Party – issues like justice and concern for the poor and the outcasts of society. Senate Democrats invited him to their issues conference in January of 2005. Wallis contends that the Democrats lost the presidential election because too many Democrats still wanted to restrict religion to the private sphere and were very uncomfortable with the language of faith and values even when applied to their own agenda."

Republicans courted the religious conservatives, appealed to a large number of Americans, and placed Bush in the White House. Senate Republican staff members consulted with Wallis on the party caucus anti-poverty agenda. But imagine how President Bush and his religious advisers must feel hearing Wallis critique of American foreign policy under the Republican regime – Wallis writes that the policy is more than preemptive, it is theologically presumptuous; not only unilateral, but dangerously messianic; not just arrogant, but rather bordering on the idolatrous and blasphemous."

Wallis wants to see a new moral politics that transcends the old categories of both the secular Left and the religious Right." Thanks to a growing number of progressive thinkers, Gods Politics hit #8 on the New York Times Best-Seller list.

The Virgil L. Jones Lecture Series is a ministry of the Gratiot Avenue Presbyterian Church in partnership with several churches in metropolitan Detroit. Diane Smalley, the pastor of the Gratiot Church, states that the bridge building lecture series was launched in 2004 at the Kirk in the Hills, Bloomfield Hills.

Wallis will lecture on Friday, May 6, at 7 p.m. at the downtown Fort Street Presbyterian Church, 631 West Fort Street, Detroit. Tickets are $15 for the general public and $10 for students and seniors (cost includes a dessert buffet). A special $35 ticket includes a discounted copy of Gods Politics with a commemorative bookmark. Tickets may be charged by calling 313-961-4533.
