Centerfield Technology Develops Tools to Detect and Resolve iSeries MUTEX Waits

Centerfield Technology, Inc., the iSeries performance-tuning expert, is developing a new mutex/DETECTOR utility to be included with the insure/MONITOR and insure/MONITOR for OneWorld iSeries diagnostic tools.

Rochester, MN (PRWEB) May 13, 2005 - (http://www.centerfieldtechnology.com) Centerfield Technology, Inc., the iSeries performance-tuning expert, is developing a new mutex/DETECTOR utility to be included with the insure/MONITOR and insure/MONITOR for OneWorld iSeries diagnostic tools.

With a growing number of UNIX and Java based applications entering the iSeries world - Oracle's EnterpriseOne (formerly PeopleSoft JDE OneWorld) and IBM's WebSphere, for example - a new word has entered the iSeries lexicon: MUTEX, short for mutual exclusion.

iSeries administrators may be familiar with mutexes via the mutex wait (MTXW) job state displayed in WRKACTJOB. This state is akin to semaphore wait (SEMW) or the well-known object and record lock wait (LCKW) state. All of these are normal job states indicating that the job is waiting for a certain function to complete before it proceeds with its next action.

So, MTXWs are a good thing, yes?

Yes. However, since mutexes are inter-process and inter-thread resource control and communication objects, it is easy to conceive of a situation where one faulty job or thread, due to improper installation, application oversight, resource conflict or operator error, can cause other jobs to erroneously enter the wait state. Centerfield Technology mutex/DETECTOR will offer a quick and easy way to detect and resolve erroneous MTXWs.

Rather than holding up multiple jobs, an administrator will be able to make a well-informed decision and opt to take action by surfacing the problem to the development staff with data to back up his/her claim, or simply right-click and end the job that is unlikely to ever release the contentious mutex.

insure/MONITOR and insure/MONITOR for One World, celebrating their 6th year, are an increasingly powerful suite of tools designed to make iSeries network job monitoring and diagnostics fast and intuitive and includes lock/DETECTOR and sql/OPTIMIZER functionality.
