(PRWEB) May 13, 2005 -- A new website, http://www.thegeorgiasite.com, has been launched to provide information and history about the state of Georgia to people browsing the internet. It also has links to dozens of sites related to Georgia and its major cities.

"The site has some very basic background information about the state of Georgia," including how Ray Charles' rendition of "Georgia on My Mind" came to be the state song, said Jay Gilbert, the owner. "In addition to the background information about Georgia's history and outdoor activities, we have some links to very specific services within the state," he said.

The recent hit film 'Ray,' told the story of Ray Charles and how the state song, "Georgia on My Mind," came to be. Initially, Charles was banned from ever performing in the state of Georgia, because he cancelled a concert there, refusing to perform, to protest segregation. However, the state later changed its mind, made an official apology, and made his rendition of 'Georgia' the state song.

Among other interesting facts and background information about Georgia on the website:

- Georgia was the 13th colony and became the fourth state, ratifying the United States Constitution on Jan. 2, 1788.

- Georgia is a beautiful state with lots of outdoors activities. For example, Tallulah Gorge State Park in Tallulah Falls, has one of the most spectacular canyons on the entire East Coast. The gorge itself is about 1,000 feet deep and 2 miles long.

- Georgia is home to UGA (University of Georgia) which is the first state-chartered university in America. It was founded Jan. 27, 1785, by the Georgia General Assembly.

- Georgia is bordered on the south by Florida, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and South Carolina, on the west by Alabama, and on the north by North Carolina and Tennessee.

- Georgia is the nation's number one producer of peaches.
