LifeLinks Sign Language Services announces an agreement with a major New York City Catholic hospital, an affiliate of New York Medical College, to produce educational videos in sign language designed for the deaf population in subjects of urgent medical interest

(PRWEB) May 27, 2005 -- Deaf persons are frequently unaware of new developments in healthcare because they do not hear radio like the rest of us, the absence of closed captioning on TV, or the inability to participate in hospital-based lectures and conferences. Lifelinks intends to rectify this problem by producing videos on topics of timely interest such as How to Stop Smoking", "CPR", "First Aid", "The Signs of a Heart Attack", "Modern Approaches to Hypertension", "Diabetes Management", etc. All lectures are to be taught by board certified physicians, in the relevant specialty, affiliated with New York Medical College, and provided in sign language. It is LifeLinks' intention to add captioning to the video to ease comprehension of complex terminology. Each video will be made available over the Club Deaf Society website (www.clubdeaf.com) and will be free.

In addition, videos are being prepared to enhance the sensitivity of the hearing community to the issues facing deaf persons when they enter a hospital, a courtroom, and school, especially at the elementary level. Videos targeting law enforcement officers and healthcare providers are receiving the highest priority. A deaf national spokesperson, familiar to many who watch network television, is under consideration to highlight the plight of deaf persons and to increase the publics awareness of the complex issues facing them.

Plans for counseling, job placement and educational services are currently in progress. In addition, a national cable channel, devoted to deaf persons, is on the drawing board in affiliation with a major national cable system. Scholarships and endowments to fund college-level four year coursework, to provide well-rounded sign language interpreters, are being created to be funded by Lifelinks. College credit interpreter continuing education courses are also on the agenda.

LifeLinks Sign Language Services is unique in providing its interpreters over video within 15 seconds, and showing the prospective user a photo and the gender of the interpreter.
