Two high school students are spending their summer designing dance costumes to be showcased in the Philadelphia Fringe & Live Arts Festival 2005.
(PRWEB) June 20, 2005 -- When the dance company, Music & Motion, needed costumes to be ready for the Philly Fringe & Live Arts Festival for this coming September, they once again turned to Veronica Selig of Havertown, PA for assistance.
Veronica, a student at Haverford High School, has always been interested in fashion and design. Over the past three years, she has completed most of the fashion courses available to high school students at the Moore School of Art and has hosted two fashion shows of her work. Her designs for this all female teen dance company at last years Fringe were a huge success and demonstrated Veronica's sense of flair, drama and creativity.
As a member of the Springfield Mall Teen Board, Veronica had the opportunity to meet other teens with similar interests in fashion. With the expansion the cast of Music & Motion for this season, she sought additional assistance from teen board member, April Weidow of Drexel Hill, who will be a senior at Upper Darby High School in the fall. April has always had an interest in fashion and is very adept at creating patterns and bringing designs to life with her sewing skills.
Both April and Veronica will be spending their summer collaborating on a number of designs to be showcased in Music & Motion's new dance work "Elements" set to premiere at the Philly Fringe on Labor Day weekend at the National Constitution Center.
For Music & Motion Dance, "Elements," is their most ambitious project yet. Featuring over twenty new dance pieces that explore the four elements of antiquity - earth, water, air and fire. According to the Artistic Director, Steven Weisz of Drexel Hill, PA, "The costumes are critical to setting the mood of each piece as well as conveying the movement of the dancers on stage."
For Veronica, designing for dancers offers a very different challenge. "The costumes can not be restrictive at all and must have their own fluidity, so as to move with the dancers while still conveying the overall theme of the dance piece." April adds in, "that their designs are part costumes, part props and part scenery that need to compliment what is happening on stage."
While both teens are not completely sure of their career paths, they know that this experience of being able to participate in the Philly Fringe and Live Arts Festival is one that they will not soon forget. "It is a rare opportunity given to teens to be able to have complete freedom of expression and demonstrate our creativity in such a public forum," says Veronica. April adds, "it is just a lot of fun and seeing your work come to life on stage is the ultimate."
Music & Motion Dance will be performing in the Philly Fringe on Labor Day weekend - Friday, September 2nd and Saturday, September 3rd. Both performances are at 8 p.m. at the National Constitution Center, 525 Arch Street, Philadelphia. Tickets are $15 and must be purchased in advance.
