Advanced Wound Care Technology From AcryMed Now Used To Reduce Nosocomial Infections

New SilvaSorb Site Dressing Offers Improved Infection Control Around Catheters and Other Percutaneous Devices.

PORTLAND, Oregon (PRWEB) July 5, 2005 – AcryMed, experts specializing in infection control and wound care technology today announced the availability of an advanced medical device that provides increased protection against infection around catheters, central venous (CV) lines, and other indwelling percutaneous devices. By combining its patented MicroLattice and silver antimicrobial technologies with an advanced design, AcryMed has developed SilvaSorb Site, an antimicrobial skirt for devices that penetrate the skin. This new product offers several advantages over other site protection devices including superior infection-fighting protection and a pediatric-safe formula.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hospital and healthcare-related infections affect more than two million patients each year – 250,000 of which are related to infections around catheters, intravenous lines and other insertion sites. Average treatment costs exceed $57,000 per patient incident.

SilvaSorb Sites advanced design allows it to wrap snuggly around catheters, CV lines, tubes and other medical devices inserted through the skin. While other site dressings may leave gaps that serve as entry areas for infection, SilvaSorb Site dressing eliminates this vulnerability (figure 1-3). In addition, the dressings thin, flexible construction allows it to lie flat against the skin providing a more secure, more comfortable protection.

SilvaSorb Site dressing also incorporates AcryMeds patented MicroLattice technology, which absorbs excess fluid and ensures the optimal moisture level around the insertion site. The companys SilvaSorb technology uniquely provides a sustained release of a highly effective ionic silver antimicrobial, so the site protection device continues to kill infection-causing germs for up to seven days. Studies show that SilvaSorb Site reduces bacteria counts greater than 99.99%.

Pediatric Safe

Some site dressings contain potentially harsh antimicrobial chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG), which may cause irritation and other hypersensitivity reactions to the skin. For this reason, these products warn against use in pediatric applications and potential danger in use on children less than sixteen years of age. However, the ionic silver used in SilvaSorb Site is both non-toxic and non-irritating. It is safe to apply directly over insertion sites and wound areas.

SilvaSorb Site is currently available in two sizes: a 1" dressing to go around small diameter devices up to 4 mm in diameter, and a 1.75" design to accommodate 5-13 mm devices such as gastric feeding tubes.

SilvaSorb Site is currently being distributed in the U.S. exclusively by Medline Industries. Medline is the nations largest privately held manufacturer and distributor of health care supplies. The company manufactures and distributes more than 100,000 products to hospitals, extended care facilities, surgery centers, home care dealers and agencies and other markets. Medline can be contacted at www.medline.com or (800) 633-5463.
