Data On Demand Expert - Evolving Solutions - Demystifies Server Virtualization and the Future of Autonomic Computing

Evolving Solutions, a data on demand and server consolidation expert demystifies server virtualization and what it means for autonomic computing.

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) August 9, 2005 -– Evolving Solutions (http://www.evolvingsol.com/sol_servervirtualization.html), a data on demand and server consolidation expert, describes server virtualization and how it paves the way for autonomic computing.

For many years, IT professionals have dreamt of robust server environments that are capable of processing weekly payroll, end of month commissions, end of year accounting while, at the same time, maintaining their daily ERP, CRM and Email systems.

All large companies experience times when their servers are stretched to the max," said Jaime Gmach, Evolving Solutions, President. What organizations don't know is that tapping into under-utilized servers that rarely surpass ten percent utilization rate, will allow them to access additional processing power."

Server Virtualization optimizes under-utilized CPU capacity, enabling currently taxed" servers to reach out to idle servers and borrow the capacity they need to complete immediate tasks. Then, without human prompting, these virtualized servers return the capacity when it is no longer needed.

Servers are able to auto-adjust to continuously changing CPU requirements," said Gmach. Server Virtualization allows networks to dynamically expand and contract. More than simply a foray into virtualization; this is a complete leap into autonomic computing."

The ultimate goal of server virtualization is autonomic computing - capacity on-demand that provides an effective road map for managing information systems regardless of size, processing demands, resource needs, time of day, or human availability.

Server virtualization is a money-saving, resource-sharing solution of which many IT shops are still waiting to take full advantage. Here are three steps to virtualizing an organization's IT environment and driving it towards autonomic computing:

Step 1 - Assess & Validate
Conduct an environmental assessment to define each department's server processing needs. Deploy custom configured resource/environmental auditing agents to poll all servers to identify current totals of: CPU, memory, adaptors, and file/system capacity and total used and unallocated disk space.

Step 2 – Rationalize and Critique
Critique the current server environment. Identify and consolidate processing-compatible applications to single servers, or alternatively, virtualize existing multi-server environment to share processing attributes from a common pool. Server virtualization would eliminate the need to purchase additional servers and would also increase utilization of existing servers from 10 – 20% to a more efficient 40 – 50%.

Step 3 – Increase ROI on Current IT Infrastructure
Tap into an existing hardware pool and reduce the need to purchase additional servers in order to increase on-demand processing capacity. Typical IT environments are often positioned in a way that is simple to cascade existing servers and reduce related server budgets for years to come.
