Dr. Alan Farrell is the winner of the fourth annual Wergle Flomp Poetry Contest sponsored by Winning Writers. The Wergle Flomp Contest is one of today's largest competitions for humor poetry. Dr. Farrell's poem, "Blaming of Parts", was judged the best of 1,398 entries from around the world. The winning entry is published at http://www.winningwriters.com/wergleflomp/2005/winners.htm.

Northampton, MA (PRWEB) August 15, 2005 -- Winning Writers is pleased to announce the results from its fourth annual Wergle Flomp Poetry Contest. Dr. Alan Farrell won first prize and $1,190 for his spoof poem, "Blaming of Parts".

1,398 entries were received from around the world. Jendi Reiter, judge of the contest, said "Dr. Farrell perfectly captures the expletive-laced patter of a drill sergeant who doesn't know whether to laugh or cry at the idiocy of both his distant commanders and his hapless recruits. Bizarrely interspersed with this narrative, we hear the languid, effete voice of the Poet describing pretty nipa palms."

The Tight Thong of J. Alice Prufrock
Rounding out the top three winners, Kakie Mashburn received second prize and $169 for "Phunny Pharm". Courtney Siebring received third prize and $60 for "The Tight Thong of J. Alice Prufrock". Five honorable mention awards of $38 were also made. $1,609 was awarded in all, making the Wergle Flomp one of today's largest competitions for humor poems.

The winning entries are published online at

The goal of the Wergle Flomp Poetry Contest is to educate poets about 'vanity contests'. These are contests which appear to be selective but whose main purpose is to beguile poets with flattery and get them to buy expensive products like anthologies, chapbooks, CDs, plaques and silver bowls. Vanity contests will often praise remarkably bad poems in their effort to sell as many products to as many people as possible. The Wergle Flomp Poetry Contest seeks the best humor poem that has been submitted to a 'vanity contest' as a joke.

Wergle Flomp is a pen name of British poet David Taub. Mr. Taub inspired the Wergle Flomp Poetry Contest by submitting absurd poems to the ongoing vanity contests at poetry.com and receiving lavish praise in return. Samples of Taub's work, and the praise, can be found at

The Wergle Flomp Poetry Contest is sponsored by Winning Writers. Submissions for the 2006 contest are accepted now through April 1, 2006. Entries are accepted online, and there is no fee to enter. For more information, please see
