Retirement Community, Alzheimer's Patients Find Joy in Sights and Sounds of Nature

Hour-long music video DVDs combine original music with magnificent nature video and authentic nature sounds to provide sensory stimulation and an engaging entertainment experience for lower functioning, long term care adults with Alzheimer's and dementia.

Milwaukee, Wis. (PRWEB) August 29, 2005 – A new series of music DVDs offers activity directors and in-home caregivers a way to provide an engaging and entertaining experience for long term care, lower functioning adults with Alzheimers disease and dementia.

Each hour-long music-video is filled with birds and animals, ocean waves, peaceful desert sunsets and gently flowing mountain streams — the type of sounds and images Alzheimers and dementia patients find appealing. They were created by Cedar Lake DVDs in Milwaukee, Wis.

Taking our Alzheimers and dementia residents on a visual journey to places far removed from their familiar surroundings, gives them a chance to be somewhere else for a while, and reduces their feeling of isolation," said Chris Karps, an activity director at St. Johns on the Lake, a Milwaukee retirement community and assisted living center.

During product development trials, nursing home residents in need of long term care who viewed the DVDs tapped their feet in time with the music, hummed softly maintaining eye contact with the screen, identified objects verbally and, above all, smiled.

Because the Alzheimers DVDs provide stimulation that is both visual and auditory, they have been found to be more effective than either music or video alone in connecting with long term care Alzheimers and dementia patients and holding their attention, including those living in a retirement community.

Unlike many activities designed to occupy retirement community residents, no pre-planning is required in order to use the DVDs. In the few seconds it takes to load a disk into a DVD player, an entire group of residents can be occupied and entertained for periods of up to an hour or longer giving activity directors or in-home caregivers more time for other things.

Cedar Lake Health & Wellness Series DVDs for Alzheimers and dementia are manufactured and distributed worldwide by Industries for the Blind, a self-sustaining 52-year-old Milwaukee-based not-for-profit organization that exists solely to provide employment for blind and visually impaired men and women.

Those wishing to learn more about Alzheimers DVDs and the benefits it has for those living in a retirement community are invited to Try Before You Buy" by previewing the productions at the Cedar Lake website, CedarLakeDVD.com/Preview. Introductory pricing per DVD (or VHS) is $24.99 including shipping.
