Computer Donations Encouraged from the Community in TechBirminghams 2nd Ecycling Event at Virginia College
(PRWEB) September 9, 2005 -- Birmingham will open its arms wider with the planned creation of a technology village for use by Katrina evacuees. Building on the success of this weeks BirminghamOpenArms.com initiative, TechBirmingham is working with the City of Birmingham and the United Way to create a TechVillage for Katrina evacuees.
The TechVillage space will be built out early next week. We are working out the details with the United Way and the City for a location that will be complementary to the relief center currently housed at the Boutwell Auditorium," said Curtis Palmer, president of TechBirmingham. After seeing such great response from the Birmingham Regional Chambers membership with over 1600 job postings on BirminghamOpenArms.com we decided to conduct an Ecycling event to collect donated computers and create a place where Katrina evacuees could easily access the job listings."
Virginia College, one of TechBirminghams Ecycling Day partners, will accept donations of usable working computers this Saturday only, September 10, 2005. The event will coincide with a PC Repair Event held from 8:30pm to 5:30pm at Virginia Colleges Palisades II campus on Palisades Blvd. For more details, the public may call (205) 271-8271.
The Virginia College School of Information Technology wanted to have an event to aid the community," said Keith Risman, academic dean. By having our students fix , refurbish and donate working PCs we are able to give something substantial to the victims of Katrina in Birmingham, a way to communicate with their families and a way to start working on getting their lives back together."
In addition to the collection event, Virginia College students will provide PC repair and diagnosis. There is no charge for the diagnosis or removal of viruses and adware. If the public bring in parts they want installed, there is no charge. Any fix that does not require the purchase of new parts will done for free that day. There will also be a couple of free workshops on maintaining a secure computer and on writing a simple computer program.
