'Why We Walk' Chronicles Inspirational Journey Toward Breast Cancer Cure

Download this press release as an Adobe PDF document.

Why would tens of thousands of people across North America annually endure aching muscles, painful blisters, porta-potties, fickle weather, and a weekend of marathon walking? The stories—and title—of a new book capture it best: Why We Walk: The Inspirational Journey Toward a Cure for Breast Cancer (Rutledge Hill Press, September 2005, ISBN: 1-4016-0220-7, Price: $29.99), released in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October).

Nashville, Tenn. (PRWEB) September 16, 2005 -- Why would tens of thousands of people across North America annually endure aching muscles, painful blisters, porta-potties, fickle weather, and a weekend of marathon walking? The stories—and title—of a new book capture it best: Why We Walk: The Inspirational Journey Toward a Cure for Breast Cancer (Rutledge Hill Press, September 2005, ISBN: 1-4016-0220-7, Price: $29.99), released in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October).

Edited by Deb Murphy, with photographs by Paula Lerner, Why We Walk takes readers on an intimate visual journey alongside more than 50 breast-cancer awareness walkers as they embark on their very personal pilgrimages. Packaged in an elegant "coffee-table" format, the book is broken into four distinct sections that answer the question "Why We Walk": Walking in Celebration, Walking to Raise Awareness, Walking in Memory, and Walking in Spirit. A CD featuring the song "Why We Walk" by award-winning country music artist Phil Vassar and wife Julie (and performed by country duo The Mamasitas) is bound into the book, increasing its value as a gift for those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer or know someone who has.

From individual trekkers to organized teams of walkers, Why We Walk examines the Breast Cancer Walks phenomenon—which collectively raise more than $100 million a year—by putting names and faces to the people who have turned the "little pink ribbon" into a big symbol for survival, hope, and a cure. Some are breast cancer survivors themselves, while others are friends or relatives of a breast cancer survivor—or walk for someone who fought the battle against this deadly disease and lost. Lerner's poignant photographs capture the joy and celebration of life that mark the Breast Cancer Walks, including the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, The Susan G. Komen Foundation's Breast Cancer 3-Day, and the American Cancer Society's Making Strides events.

Why We Walk will receive on-site promotion at the top twenty walks during October through December 2005, reminding event participants of the reason why they pound the pavement for a cure. As one of the book's featured walkers says, "When the rest of us think we just can't go another mile, a walker wearing a survivor shirt inevitably comes into view, and we find the strength to keep on walking."
