London (PRWEB) January 4, 2006 -- The London Eye was the centrepiece for London’s spectacular New Years Eve celebrations yesterday while the rest of London was brought to a stand-still thanks to the threatened strike action by the RMT.
The instant that the London Eye spectacular fireworks display had ended the roads were thrown into chaos while thousands of people tried to make their way home by car.
The full strike that was previosuly threatened by the RMT never actually happened and most of London's 300+ tube stations remained open, however some 30 - 35 stations were closed.
Mike Brown, chief opperating officer of London Underground said "we are maintaining a near normal service and together with the remaining open stations and the emergency bues, we will get through it tonight as best we can"
Thousands of travellers were caught in the rain and the roads were in complete gridlock for hours following the London Eye’s spectacular display.
The countdown at the Millennium Wheel started at 11:55pm when lights around it’s perimeter began changing colour and rotating at an awesome pace. At midnight, the sound and light show silenced the thousands of onlookers, who had travelled by car and by foot to the area, into disbelief and the spectacle built into a sublime and mesmerising climax. “These have been the best fireworks I have ever seen” said onlooker Lin Cordoray who had come to London with her partner and son to see the display only at the last minute. “We managed to find a special parking spot, thanks to a kind man behind a barrier but we’ve no idea what the roads will be like when we need to leave”.
The noise began again as the display ended with a spectacular cruscendo and the Capital partied on in spite of the mayhem and despite last minute talks to try to overt action from the RMT. Tube station staff were unable to reach agreement and so the strike action commenced at noon on New Year's Eve to noon on New Year's Day.
London Underground and the RMT transport union ended on Thursday as far apart as ever from a breakthrough in a dispute over the implications of a new 35-hour week.
The London Eye looked on as thousands continued to ignore the weather, the tube strike and continue until the small hours
