The list ranges from the largest U.S. Chinese New Year Parade, in San Francisco to events in Texas to NY. Childbook.com has been creating a list of Chinese New Year Events since 2002. This year celebrates the Year of the Dog. The Chinese Calendar is based on the Lunar Calendar and the date for New Year varies each year, this year Chinese New Year falls on January 29th, 2006. The Chinese year naming is based on a Zodiac of twelve animals (Dog, Pig, Rooster, Dragon, Ox, Sheep, Horse, Rabbit, Snake, Monkey, Rat, and Tiger ), and children born each year are supposed to have different characteristics based on the animal of that year.
Per Ray Ritchey, Owner of ChildBook.com, he started the list because of his frustration on finding out about local events in the Los Angeles area for Chinese New Year. The 2006 list of events ranges from parades, such as the largest Chinese New Year Parade in the US, located in San Francisco, to a Chinese New Year dinner in Oklahoma hosted by a local chapter of Families with Children (adopted) From China. This year is especially meaningful to him, because his daughter was born in the last year of the Dog on Chinese New Years.
