A self-guided walking tour of artists' studios in the Gowanus Canal section of Brooklyn on Saturday and Sunday, October 21-22, 2006 from 1-6 PM.
Brooklyn, NY (PRWEB) October 7, 2006 -- On Saturday and Sunday October 21-22, 2006, the artists of Gowanus, Brooklyn, will open their studios free to the public from 1-6 p.m. The Annual Gowanus Artists Studio Tour (AGAST) is a self-guided walking tour featuring over 130 artists in 26 different locations. Some locations are large factory buildings with up to 30 artists participating, and others are smaller industrial buildings with one or two artists’ studios. Thousands of visitors come from all over New York City and beyond to get an inside look at artists’ studios, chat with artists and learn about the Gowanus art scene.
Gowanus, Brooklyn and its artists -- The industrial neighborhood surrounding the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, New York, is home to a wide variety of artists and artisans who work in the former factory buildings and warehouses there. Bounded by Fifth Avenue, 10th Street, Smith Street and Baltic Street, Gowanus lies between Park Slope and Carroll Gardens. Artists working in the old factories are no less industrious than the former industrial tenants. Every form of visual art is being produced in Gowanus: painting, sculpture, drawings, prints, installations, photographs, video, ceramics, fiber and wearable art, collage, glassworks and more. Each open studio door leads to an artist’s world, where the next one you visit is always different from the last. The Annual Gowanus Artists Studio Tour gives the public a chance to personally meet with artists, ask questions and see the environment in which they work. This provides a fascinating view of the art world today, at its source.
Visiting the tour -- The AGAST website http://www.AGASTBrooklyn.com provides complete visitor information and features a virtual gallery with images of each artist’s work. On the tour, visitors will be guided by a color-coded map which will make navigating the neighborhood easy. All participating studios and nearby subway stops are pinpointed on the map, which lists all artists individually. The map will also provide suggestions for the many shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities in the neighborhood. Maps will be available at all participating studio locations, and can also be downloaded from the website.
The Annual Gowanus Artists Studio Tour is a sponsored project of the Brooklyn Arts Council.
