Award Winning Writer Creates Plays For Podcasting: "Handwritten Theatre" Makes Every iPod a Personal Theatre

Emmy winner Joseph Dougherty ("thirtysomething," "Once and Again," "Saved") has produced a new cycle of original plays for his popular podcast/blogsite, "Handwritten Theatre." The brief dramatic pieces are a rare peek inside a writer's notebook.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 30, 2006 -- Joseph Dougherty has written for the movies, Broadway and television, and his first book, "Comfort and Joi," is becoming an underground hit, but when he discovered the world of podcasting, the chance to create new drama for an audience of one listener at a time was irresistible.

"I created 'Handwritten Theatre' because the idea of having access to the listener with no interference from a network or a studio, where I could experiment with language and situations, was something I had to explore," Dougherty explains. "I was charged by the concept of producing brief dramatic pieces people could download and carry around with them, turning every iPod into a personal theatre."

Listeners will be able to get inside my notebooks
Dougherty, described by filmmaker Christopher Guest ("Waiting for Guffman," "Best in Show") as "a fantastically gifted writer," launched the series in January 2006 and recently went back into the studio to create new dramas for the podcast.

The Public Radio Exchange calls the plays of Handwritten Theatre, "Spare and elegant snapshots...both dramatic and poignant."

"Listeners will be able to get inside my notebooks," the writer/director promises. "That's where I try out techniques and characters. Then I take these experiments into the studio and work with a group of actors. The goal is to go from handwritten page to polished recording with a minimum of second-guessing."

The results of this unique approach are creatively playful miniatures; some humorous, some provocative, all of them stimulating.

Handwritten Theatre is available for download at http://handwrittentheatre.blogspot.com. Subscribe to the podcast version at the Apple iTunes Music Store. Public Radio Stations can lease the Handwritten Theatre programs through The Public Radio Exchange at www.prx.org.
