Compete for cash, free software and free books by writing an academic paper that uses the syntax tools and resources in Logos Bible Software 3 to make a contribution to biblical studies.

BELLINGHAM, WA and ATLANTA, GA (PRWEB) October 13, 2006 -- The Society of Biblical Literature and Logos Bible Software announced two sets of awards for papers that creatively use technology in exploring questions of grammar and syntax in biblical studies: one focusing on the Hebrew Bible, the other on the Greek New Testament. The contests are open to all those engaged in the study of those disciplines, and prizes will be awarded in both areas for student and faculty/professional categories. Twelve awards will be given, totalling $8,000 in cash, $8,000 in software, and $1,600 in print publications.

"The new technology and databases developed by Logos Bible Software and its partners have potential to open up new avenues of research. The goal in co-sponsoring this contest is to advance our understanding of grammar and syntax within the Greek and Hebrew texts by applying the technology in creative ways," said Kent Richards, Executive Director, Society of Biblical Literature.

Papers submitted must make significant use of the syntactically tagged databases produced by Logos Bible Software (www.logos.com/logos3). For the Hebrew Bible, participants must utilize the Andersen-Forbes Analyzed Text and the Phrase-Marker Analysis visualizations. For the Greek New Testament, participants must utilize the OpenText.org Syntactically Analyzed Greek New Testament and/or the Lexham Syntactic Greek New Testament. The review panels seek contributions to the understanding of biblical Hebrew and Greek grammar and syntax through the use of these tools.

"This contest is a concrete way to encourage scholars and students working at the new frontiers of biblical scholarship," said Bob Pritchett, President and CEO, Logos Bible Software. "The next generation of scholars will take it for granted that tools like syntactical visualizations and syntax search are standard equipment."

Two review panels of SBL members will determine the winners of the awards. The deadline for submissions is May 1, 2007. Winners will be announced during the SBL International Meeting in Vienna, Austria, July 22-26, 2007.
