Minority-Owned Business Mentors Philadelphia Youth

Minority-owned X-Marketing mentored students from West Philadelphia's University City High School as part of a job shadowing program designed to help students explore career options and better set academic and career goals.

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) February 1, 2006 -- On Wednesday, January 25, 2005, Philadelphia-based X-Marketing opened its doors to four ninth-grade University City High School students for the Twelfth Annual “Shadowing Day,” a program sponsored by the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the School District of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Youth Network, and the Campaign for Mentors at United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania. The full-day shadowing-program allows students to observe workplace culture while exploring career options in order to better set academic and career goals.

As a minority-owned start-up company, X-Marketing represents the ideal mentor for these students as its President is also an ex-teacher at University City High School. “Having taught at University City, I understand the impact this program can make on a student’s life, and jumped at the opportunity to be part of it,” said Leexan Hong, President of X-Marketing.

X-Marketing staff took students through a basic lesson in marketing.

One student commented, “We learned a lot today.” The same student later expressed interest in a potential marketing career.

“Analytical skills are integral to success in this industry, but creativity and originality makes marketing a unique and fun career option,” said Hong. “The students really caught-on that the work they do inside the classroom is great preparation for the workforce.”

The Twelfth Annual “Shadowing Day” showed students that their schoolwork has real-world application, while offering hands-on experience in a potential career path. “This mentoring program left a powerful impression on the students,” said Hong. “We really encourage other companies to get involved.”
