Whilst Leading Experts Gather For American Sewing and Stitchery Expo, Australian Grandmother Steps Onto The World Stage

With sewing celebrities Kaye Wood, Martha Pullen, Sandra Betzina, Nancy Zieman and Sue Hausmann attending America's largest annual sewing expo, on the other side of the globe there’s an elderly stateswoman making her own waves to our far distant shores.

Mudgee, Australia (PRWEB) February 9, 2006 -- As America prepares for the annual Sewing and Stitchery Expo at Washington State University next month, Australia’s latest leading light and budding nonagenarian, Mavis Cox, is just stepping onto the international sewing arena all the way from Mudgee, Australia.

This amazing metamorphosis has only taken place in the last 12 months as Mavis set about putting into words her lifetime of sewing knowledge in order that she can leave behind a belated legacy to the up and coming sewing generations the world over.

The Doll Lady Of Mudgee
“I’ve been blessed to lead a healthy and productive life whilst growing up and living here in Mudgee,” says Mavis from her country home 160 miles north-west of Sydney. “Even when I retired from teaching I would often have people wanting help with their sewing, dressmaking or doll making, amongst other handicraft hobbies that I’ve taken up over the years.”

With the encouragement of friends and family, Mavis has now let the world come to her via the Internet, even though she has never set foot outside of her native Australia. “It’s unbelievable for me to now have people from so many countries buying my new book ‘Sewing 101’ that I wrote especially with the beginner in mind.”

Even with their celebrity sewing status you can be certain that each guest speaker appearing at the Sewing and Stitching Expo has had to start from the grass-roots level to work their way up. And it is more than likely that Mavis was out there learning her craft long before any speaker was even wearing their first baby clothes!

According to Mavis, “Sewing can lead to so many rewarding experiences and opportunities that you could ever imagine. Over all my lifetime I’ve seen fashions come and go, but that's also the reason why there are forever opportunities for those people full of creative ideas.”

“I only hope that my insatiable appetite for keeping myself active will help motivate many more not to give up on life far too early,” comments Mavis as she prepares for her 90th birthday in just a few months time.

This national treasure for senior citizens worldwide has even been dubbed “The Doll Lady Of Mudgee” for her doll making exploits that she took up at age 69! “People said back then that I was too old to be attending class, but I wanted to do it, and I enjoyed every minute of it.” And now, almost 21 years later, Mavis can look back at a doll collection of over 200 that fills her home.
