This year’s Mississippi Valley Trade and Transportation Conference, February 22-24 in New Orleans, promises to be "the big one": the industry's first major meeting since Katrina.
New Orleans, LA (PRWEB) February 10, 2006 -- This month, the Mississippi Valley Trade and Transportation Council (MVTTC) is holding the industry’s first major meeting since Hurricane Katrina. Scheduled for February 22-24 in New Orleans, it will be the trade association’s 24th annual conference.
The Mississippi Valley contains the world's largest complex of river terminals and deep draft ports. Prior to Katrina, these ports handled over 170 million tons of seaborne trade -- approximately one-sixth of America’s cargo volume -- each year.
The lower Mississippi and its tributaries are an unparalleled natural resource for the transportation and distribution of freight. This system provides a cost advantage which is key to U.S. competitiveness in global markets for coal, grain, and other bulk commodities. Since Katrina, transportation markets through this region have tightened, challenging this advantage.
What is the current status of trade activity along the lower Mississippi? How is the region’s transportation and industry infrastructure being restored and/or redeveloped?
The MVTTC conference will address these issues through panels of industry leaders and representatives from government agencies. Specific topics include:

-- Navigational infrastructure rehabilitation
-- Traffic flow
-- Intermodal transportation
-- Commodities movement and commerce
