Telematics Update has confirmed speakers from Panalpina, Ace Insurance and the Rotterdam Customs Office to take part in the forthcoming Container Tracking and Security conference in Rotterdamm.

London, UK (PRWEB) February 23, 2006 -- Telematics Update, organiser of Container Tracking and Security 2006, 10-11 April in Rotterdam, has confirmed that speakers from Panalpina, Ace Insurance and the Rotterdam Customs Office have joined the event’s prestigious list of presenters.

The newly confirmed speakers join those already on the roster, including:

  • Paul Collins, Head of the Frontier Security team, HM Revenue and Customs Frontiers;
  • Jozef Hupperetz, European Commission, Taxation and Customs Union Directorate-General, Customs Policy (DG TAXUD), Supply Chain Security;
  • Jurjen Duintjer, Security Advisor, Port of Rotterdam Authority; and
  • Hans van Aurich, Product Manager, Marine and Land Material Insurance, Nationale Nederlanden Insurances, and member of the Cargo Committee, Dutch Association of Insurers.

The two-day event, sponsored by Sony Ericsson, will bring together telematics providers, cargo underwriters, forwarders and shipping companies to discuss regulations, initiatives and standards while comparing the latest in tracking solutions. Attendees will have the opportunity to understand the reality of today’s container security business opportunities, develop partnerships to ensure they can deliver the solutions customers need, and understand the technical issues that underpin a successful solution.

More than 90 percent of the world’s goods move in shipping containers, with an estimated 200 million containers moved in 2005. But the practice of sending unaccompanied containers unmonitored halfway around the world provides excellent opportunities for tampering, from smuggling to terrorist plots to conceal chemical or biological weapons among legitimate shipments of food, pharmaceuticals or clothing.

Technologies such as MobinTele’s Secured by CargoTrax system, and the “Tamper-Resistant Embedded Controller” developed by IBM and Maersk Logistics, give shippers the potential to know where their containers are at all times and whether any of them have been opened without authorization. The improved visibility not only helps to thwart criminal schemes but offers payoffs in terms of reduced inventory. Less expensive options, such as Oxloc’s GSM system, track the same information but report it only after a container returns to dry land.

Because the cost of such technology can be high, insurers are considering incentives such as reduced premiums for companies that track their shipments. And government regulations are moving closer to requiring some type of tracking mechanism.

Container Tracking and Security 2006 will focus on all of these factors, with sessions designed to explore the reality of today’s container security situation, government mandates and programs, and the business case for investing in tracking and monitoring containers.
