Lynn, MA (PRWEB) March 2, 2006 -– Lynn Public Schools is facing a teacher shortage. The seventh largest school district in Massachusetts has educators retiring at a record rate. On Thursday, March 2, 2006 from 4 pm - 7 pm, Lynn Public Schools will be holding a teacher recruitment fair at the Lynn Vocational Technical Institute (LVTI) Annex at 90 Commercial Street in Lynn, MA. Dr. Ray Bastarache, Deputy Superintendent for Lynn Public Schools, explains, “We hired a lot of teachers in 1969, 1970, and 1971 and now they’re retiring. We need to find thirty to fifty new teachers for next school year.”
Dr. Bastarache says that the district is being proactive to find replacements for retiring teachers. But not just anyone will do. Dr. Bastarache describes that Lynn Public Schools is looking for the best educators they can find. “We’re an urban district with challenges and we want to hire top teachers.”
One way in which the district is attacking the teacher shortage is to use new technology. Dr. Bastarache explains, “More than a year ago, the Human Resource Manager for Lynn Public Schools, Patricia Libby, came into my office very excited about a new teacher recruiting tool called SchoolSpring. We talked to a number of suburban districts in Massachusetts using the system. We knew we’d be the first urban district to use SchoolSpring but we weren't concerned. The opportunities for Lynn Public Schools using new technology like this are huge.”
SchoolSpring, found online at www.schoolspring.com, is a web-based educational recruiting service that started in Vermont and is used by nearly every school district in the state. It has been expanding throughout New England and many districts in Massachusetts have quickly seen the advantages of this new technology and are signing up.
Dr. Bastarache continues, “Our district operates on a very large scale. When you need to hire as many teachers as we do you can get buried under mountains of paperwork. But with SchoolSpring everything is online, streamlining the whole process. We also need to attract top candidates and this service gives us national exposure for our positions.”
