55 Congressional Catholic Hypocrites Try to Deceive Public on Abortion as Part of James Carville's National Strategy

Catholic Answers Action calls them on the carpet.

SAN DIEGO, CA (PRWEB) March 6, 2006 -- Catholic Answers Action has denounced the “Statement of Principles” released last week by fifty-five Catholic Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Led by Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), a group of fifty-five Catholic Democrats in the House signed a statement designed to paper over their dissent from Church teaching on abortion. Signers included House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco.

Jimmy Akin, spokesman for Catholic Answers Action, released the following statement to the press:
“The fifty-five signers of the statement have done American voters a favor by revealing what hypocrites they are. Their statement of ‘principles’ is a transparent attempt to disguise their position, and they’re not fooling anybody. They are putting their politics above their faith.

“The statement says that they ‘work every day to advance respect for life,’ but the signers of the statement have an 80 percent anti-life voting record this term.

“They say that they ‘agree with the Catholic Church about the value of human life and the undesirability of abortion,’ but this is transparently false. If they agreed with the Catholic Church about the value of life and the undesirability of abortion, they wouldn’t be voting in favor of abortion.

“They acknowledge that they are ‘in disagreement with the Church in some areas,’ but abortion isn’t just ‘some area.’ For Catholics, it is a non-negotiable issue at the heart of Catholic social teaching.

“The right to life of the unborn is an infallibly defined part of Catholic doctrine, and no Catholic in good conscience can advocate the killing of babies in the womb. Period.

“Their talk about recognizing the Church’s position of ‘moral leadership’ while defending the practice of baby-killing is absurd.

“The real question is: Why are they doing this? And the answer is clear: The tide has turned in the abortion debate. Pro-abortion politicians are on the run now that Catholics have woken up on the abortion issue.

“To stop the growing hemorrhage of Catholic voters, pro-abortion politicians in the Democratic Party have initiated a plan to disguise their position on abortion. Last year James Carville and his associates released a memo on the dramatic and increasing loss of the Catholic vote that the Democratic Party has suffered in recent years and identified abortion as a key reason for it. This is part of their effort to change their image without changing their stance in favor of killing babies.”

Catholic Answers Action publishes the Voter’s Guide for Serious Catholics, which was read by 20 million people during the 2004 election cycle. The voter’s guide focuses on the famous “five non-negotiable issues” that no Catholic can support: abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, human cloning, and homosexual “marriage.”
