Instantiations Brings Java Back to the Desktop with RCP Developer Harnesses Eclipse RPC to Speed Java Client-Application Building, Performance and Consistency

Download this press release as an Adobe PDF document.

RCP Developer™ is an Eclipse-based software tool for constructing Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP) applications with SWT Designer™ (GUI builder), WindowTester™ (GUI tester) and RCP Packager™ (installer). It harnesses Eclipse RCP to put Java back on the desktop by reducing development time, increasing performance, and assuring consistent application look-and-feel.

Santa Clara, CA (PRWEB) March 21, 2006 -- Instantiations Inc., a leading provider of advanced software development solutions, today announced RCP Developer™. RCP Developer contains GUI construction, testing and packaging tools that speed up the creation of Java client applications by harnessing the power of the Eclipse Rich Client Platform (RCP). It is the first development tool to exploit Eclipse RCP core services for creating Java-based client and standalone desktop applications. The company is demonstrating the development tool at EclipseCon 2006, taking place March 21-23, 2006, at the Santa Clara Convention Center in California.

“For several years, the performance of Java on the client-side has been considered a significant weakness of the technology,” said Mike Taylor, CEO of Instantiations. “RCP Developer, combined with the capabilities found in Eclipse RCP, changes that. Together, they bring Java back to the desktop by providing the life-cycle development tools, performance, modularity and extensibility that enables developers to fully exploit Eclipse RCP.”

RCP Developer, combined with the capabilities found in Eclipse RCP, changes that. Together, they bring Java back to the desktop by providing the life-cycle development tools, performance, modularity and extensibility that enables developers to fully exploit Eclipse RCP.
"The Eclipse Rich Client Platform is the leading framework for creating Java client applications," said Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation Inc. "RCP Developer is the first tool to bring comprehensive application construction, GUI testing and packaging of rich-client applications to Eclipse RCP. We are delighted that Instantiations is delivering this important technology to the growing Eclipse ecosystem."

Brings New Functions to Rich Client Development
RCP Developer helps users deliver Java client applications to their customers faster and with more consistency. Three new capabilities let developers focus on creating business logic, rather than handcrafting and maintaining the infrastructure code needed for any application to run. These include:

  • SWT Designer™ empowers developers to quickly create the views, editors, perspective, preference pages and other user interface elements that comprise Eclipse RCP applications. SWT Designer gives developers complete control over user interface construction through intuitive visual design, native look-and-feel and access to the high performance SWT GUI framework of Eclipse RCP.

  • WindowTester™ assures application quality through automated testing of the graphical user interfaces that comprise Eclipse RCP applications. WindowTester minimizes the need for developers to hand-code GUI test cases through automated recording, test generation, assertion coding and playback facilities.

  • RCP Packager™ streamlines the build and deployment process for Eclipse RCP applications by assembling application elements together into a single package for easy deployment... RCP Packager helps developers reliably create and maintain high-quality Eclipse RCP installations while reducing development time.

"Tools like RCP Developer are just what the industry needs,” said Rich Main, director, Java development environments at SAS. “Together, Eclipse RCP and Instantiations RCP Developer will help bring Java applications back onto the desktop by providing tools for constructing and testing user interfaces and packaging small-footprint, rich client applications for deployment."

Price and Availability
RCP Developer is available immediately through either a new software subscription service or by a traditional software license, allowing users to select the approach that best suits their needs.

For users who prefer more flexibility or a lower initial investment, the company offers a per developer subscription price of $199 (US) a year for the RCP Developer Tools Library™. The yearly subscription provides access to all the product tools available in the library — including SWT Designer, WindowTester and RCP Packager — as well as upgrades and technical support.

For users who prefer a standard software license agreement, Instantiations offers RCP Developer for $499 (US). The company currently offers a stand-alone version of SWT Designer for $199 and plans to release stand-alone versions of WindowTester at $199 and RCP Packager at $299 in the near future. These offerings include one year of upgrade, maintenance and technical support.

Non-commercial and site licensing pricing is also available. More information can be found on the company’s website at www.instantiations.com.
