BOSTON, MA (PRWEB) April 5, 2006 -- Denmark-based painter Lene Gammelgaard, the first Nordic woman to scale Mount Everest on the tragic 1996 American Expedition led by Scott Fischer, will exhibit her bountiful, bright canvases at Galerie Swanström on Newbury Street from May 5 to June 17. Fischer died on the expedition and Gammelgaard, and the other survivors were featured in the IMAX film Everest, directed by David Breashears.
May 10, 2006 marks the 10-year anniversary of the infamous summit that left climbers to perish amidst Mount Everest’s most ferocious storm. A soon to be released documentary film, featuring Gammelgaard, also directed by David Breashears, tells the story, a decade later, of those who survived, Gammelgaard included, and of those who died in an inescapable collision of human aspiration and human frailty.
Gammelgaard’s paintings are powerful and emotional. Her style projects a constant battle for equilibrium between a vast untamable, unspoiled wildness and the deepest vulnerable serenity. Her works are large scale, vibrant and forceful. Their theme is the inner urge that pushes a creative human being to break free from restriction. The paintings encompass two worlds representing extreme opposites on a continuum, while constantly aiming for a kind of complex union.
“Lene’s energy and passion has been redirected to the canvas, on which she presents rich textures and emotions reminiscent of landscapes and experiences in the mountains,” says fellow mountaineer and film director David Breashears.
In this exhibition, hand blown glass works by Rikke Bruzelius, a Danish glass artist, will also be presented. Bruzelius is inspired to create glass works that compliment Gammelgaard’s lush, vibrant paintings. Bruzelius’s glass pieces awaken the senses and inner spirit via color combinations and physical harmonious forms. Gammelgaard and Bruzelius joint exhibitions have been shown at the prestigious Svenske Villa at Bernstorffs Parken in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Gammelgaard is the published author of Climbing High, published by HarperCollins Publishers. In her book, Gammelgaard shares her experiences and the daunting challenges of her completed summit. She writes movingly about Everest’s awesome beauty and, ultimately, of her own passions that lead to her survival of the tragic expedition.
