"I have a great relationship with my mom, and I thought this would be the perfect way to do something thoughtful for mothers everywhere,” said Schell, who’s also a student at Loyola University majoring in music and philosophy. “I wrote these songs while I was growing up, and they hold a special place in my heart. I don’t know how I would have gotten through some tough times without my mom – she’s my everything.”
Schell, 21, a piano student since kindergarten, turned to writing and performing songs while in high school to help cope with the news that her younger brother was diagnosed with leukemia. Her song writing resulted in “Emptier Streets,” an eclectic blend of indie pop and chamber rock. The songs are inspirational, straight-from-the-heart and full of meaning. Her music is currently featured at more than 500 salons and spas across the country.
Schell’s generous Mother’s Day gift idea is characteristic of her giving way. Since her family’s brush with a serious illness, Schell has dedicated herself to supporting various charities through ticket proceeds and benefit concerts. Later this month, she’ll be helping to raise money, awareness and hair-clippings for Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to children suffering from long-term medical hair loss.
