How one group of civic-minded volunteers made the Easter Bunny real for thousands of children and their families on Easter Sunday.
Clearwater, FL (PRWEB) April 22, 2006 -- It was Easter morning and among the estimated three thousand kids and their families that attended the 14th Annual Easter Egg Hunt put on by the Clearwater Community Volunteers, two little girls, ages 6 and 8, were bubbling over with excitement. They had traveled all the way from Largo by bus to the huge Easter Egg Hunt at Coachman Park in downtown Clearwater. They knew they would be able to scoop up candy from some of those thousands of eggs scattered across the park, but they when they arrived they found to their delight that there was also a $100 bill in one of those eggs.
There were so many things they needed. What they could do with that $100! So the little girls prayed.
“My daughter found the egg with the hundred dollar bill in it,” the stunned mother told one of event volunteers. “We came from Largo on the bus and my little girl prayed for money.”
Now they could go to Wal-Mart to buy one of the little girls her birthday present.
A thousand dollars, mostly in 20 dollar bills and some 50’s, were scattered in the 10,000 plastic eggs that covered Coachman Park on Easter morning. Some children also found golden eggs and won adorable stuffed bunnies -- 170 of the cuddly creatures were handed out.
“We were impressed with all the eggs,” said Debi Dapice, another Largo resident and employee at Belleair Coins and Gold, who came with her husband Nick, a Target employee, and their 2-year-old daughter to enjoy the fun. “There’s horse rides. There’s face painting. There’s a petting zoo. There’s everything! It’s great!”
Abigail Doerges, age 4, is a veteran of the Clearwater Easter Egg Hunt. “We’ve come every year for the last three years, since Abigail could toddle,” said her mother Jaqueline, who has lived in Clearwater for eight years.
The 14th annual Easter Egg Hunt put on by the Clearwater Community Volunteers, an auxiliary group of the Church of Scientology. Several local businesses joined in to support the event along with the 50 volunteers who spend most of Easter day stuffing plastic eggs with candy and prizes; setting up the park; supervising the activities and cleaning up after everyone else has gone home.
Among the business that supported the event were Starbucks, Constant Cravings, Tony’s Pizzeria & Ristorante, Home Depot, Sam’s Club, Krispy Kreme and Fast Signs. All donated goods, materials and their time to support the community event.
“Clearwater Community Volunteers has been dedicated to helping the community since 1994. Over the years we’ve held many events and raised money for a variety of charities and helped with cleaning up the environment but this Easter event is one of our favorites. The look on the kids faces when they race out to grab the candy or when one of them finds a golden egg is priceless,” said Joanie Sigal, Clearwater Community Volunteers chairperson.
