The Hormonal Cause of Acne: The Real Culprit

The first significant change in non-prescription acne medication in 50 years goes deeper than clogged pores and bacteria. New medication works in the oil gland to reduce the negative effects of hormones.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) May 2, 2006 -- The first significant change in non-prescription acne medication in 50 years goes deeper than clogged pores and bacteria. New medication works in the oil gland to reduce the negative effects of hormones.

Alex Khadavi, MD, Associate Professor of Dermatology at the University of Southern California treats the primary cause of acne, the hormonal byproduct known as DHT. Dr Khadavi states, “Most consumers generally have no idea that the actual cause of acne begins with hormonal activity, not bacteria or clogged pores.” That is why women breakout during menstrual cycles, teens breakout during puberty and why periods of stress, such as the prom, weddings or big meetings, are often accompanied with embarrassing blemishes.

Acne begins when a naturally occurring hormonal byproduct, dihydro-testosterone or simply DHT, stimulates the sebaceous (oil) gland to produce excess sebum (oil). It is this excess oil that traps bacteria and skin cells and sets the stage for acne. Dr. Khadavi’s research led to the development of Clearogen, the first “Anti-DHT Acne Treatment,” that addresses acne in a more comprehensive way. It works topically, at the level of the skin, without altering the hormonal balance inside the body. It helps inhibit the conversion of testosterone to DHT and helps block DHT from binding to receptors on the sebaceous gland. In doing so, it reduces excess oil secretion and promotes the healthy production of sebum (oil) that the skin needs to moisturize and protect itself.

Currently popular over-the-counter acne treatments continue to treat acne the way it has been treated for decades, by treating the symptoms of acne: bacteria and clogged pores. None of the current products address DHT, the hormone responsible for producing acne in the first place. Although each product claims to be unique and better than the next, they primarily share the same ingredients, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, the mainstay of acne treatment since the 1950’s. These ingredients alleviate the symptoms of acne but they do not treat its underlying hormonal cause. Clearogen (www.clearogen.com) is the first acne treatment that combines benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid with effective anti-DHT ingredients to treat the symptoms of acne as well as its underlying cause, offering a comprehensive acne solution.
