Rest and relaxation seem like impossible feats to most Americans trying to balance the demands of family and career. This balancing act could account for the continued growth in minimally-invasive cosmetic plastic surgery procedures with 8.4 million performed in 2005. According to the statistics released today by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), minimally-invasive procedures increased 13 % from the previous year and 53 % since 2000.

(PRWEB) May 4, 2006 -- Rest and relaxation seem like impossible feats to most Americans trying to balance the demands of family and career.

Minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures are mostly performed in an outpatient setting, do not call for general anesthesia, require little to no downtime and usually cost less than the more invasive cosmetic surgeries. The top five minimally-invasive procedures this year and since 2000 are Botox® (3.8 million), chemical peel (1 million), microdermabrasion (840,000), laser hair removal (780,000), and sclerotherapy – elimination of spider veins (590,000).

“This data is particularly interesting especially for facial rejuvenation,” says Dr. Sam Speron, plastic surgery expert and consumer advocate. “As patients look more towards noninvasive procedures, plastic surgeons are in a unique position to be able to offer both ends of the spectrum to their patients. I would be very weary of going to someone who only offered one option to treat a particular problem. They should offer both surgical and nonsurgical options and within each one there should be several alternatives.”

Since 2000, total surgical cosmetic procedures have decreased by 5%. In the same time period, facelifts decreased 19% and forehead lifts 54%; however, Botox® injections increased 388 % and laser skin resurfacing 59 %. Another notable trend - collagen and fat injections have decreased 58 and 13 % respectively since 2004, but on the rise are hyaluronic acid (Restylane®, Hylaform®), polylactic acid (SculptraTM), and calcium hydroxylapatite (RadiesseTM) fillers. This can be attributed to the fact that collagen and fat injections can be time consuming with allergy tests and harvesting procedures, and the newer fillers can achieve similar, if not better, results.

Dr. Sam Speron is a Chicago Plastic Surgeon and is widely recognized as a leading expert on plastic surgery. Dr. Speron’s educational efforts have received critical acclaim from the media from around the country including radio (“The Paul Harvey show” on WGN radio), local TV (multiple CBS Channel 2 10PM special reports, multiple appearances on “This week with Dr. Breen”), national television (Discovery Health Channel), local radio (“The Joe Gentile Show” on WJJG on AM-1530, KFIZ Milwaukee with Joe Scheibinger), newspapers (Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun Times, Crain’s Chicago Business, Daily Herald), US magazines (People, The Complete Woman, Chicago Magazine, Living Life, Satisfaction, Medical Economics, The Lutheran), international magazines (Company, Europe) and online news (plasticsurgery.com, LocateaDoc.com, HealthNewsDigest.com, cosmeticsurgery.com, ChicagoHealthandFitness.com, ToursandTales.com).
