Harlem Book Fair-Roxbury Returns to Boston for the second year to the heart of the Roxbury Community on the campus of Roxbury Community College. Continuing to expand public awareness of Black writers experience and the importance of literacy.
(PRWEB) May 4, 2006 -- For the second of many years to come- the Harlem Book Fair-Roxbury returns to Boston, Saturday June 24th.
Brought to Boston for the first time in June of 2005 by Roxbury Action Program and Amber Communitcations Group Inc,. the Book Fair returns this year to the campus of Roxbury Community College with a day - long experience of literary highlihgts. Harlem Book Fair-Roxbury '05 saw more than 1500 in attendance to see and hear authors such as Irene Smalls, Heywood Fennel and Poets Rage Sinclair, Vernon C. Robinson and Brother Blue, entertainment by Deborah Peterson and Rapper D. Lopes.
Among the sponsors were Citizens Bank and E. Denis Walsh. This year June 24, 2006 in addition to the many authros such as Historian Bob Hayden, author and playwrite Haywood Fennel, Sheila Kinston Dean, former Globe editor Joanne Skerrett, Maria McNaught there will be authors panels, writers workshops, vendors, literacy activities for all ages, a Health Pavilion with representatives from the Lupus Foundation and The Harvard School of Public Health CHOICE Program and others providing wellness information, interactive heatlth related activities, information of the state of African American Health and a health resource van will be on site. There will be a tour of historical Black Boston with emphasis on Black literary achievements of the past and present.
Harlem Book Fair-Roxbury related activities begin with the Declaration of June as Literacy Month in Boston by RAP and the Boston City Council that starts up the literacy group activities throughout the month encouraging reading that should continue through the summer.
The Saturday preceding the Book Fair, June 17 is the date of the Harlem Book Fair- Roxbury Literary Luncheon Fund Raiser at Northeastern University's African American Artist in Residency Program. This reception and book signing is a chance to hear and interact with authors in a salon setting is free to the Public and is invitation only. This is also the occasion when the Patricia Raynor Literary Citation is presented to emerging poets and to entrepreneurs who promote African American Literature. Preliminary activities continue with the Awards Ceremony on Friday June 23 when the Charles Yancey Award is presented to honor those who have worked to promote literacy among youth and adults in the Boston African American Community.
