As of April 2006 there have been 186 cases of a rare fungal eye infection called Fusarium keratitis among ReNu® with MoistureLoc® users. This outbreak of eye infection has prompted Basuch & Lomb to cease shipments of ReNu® with MoistureLoc® and ask retailers to pull the product from the shelves.
Bausch & Lomb and the FDA have requested that people immediately stop using ReNu® with MoistureLoc® because of the serious effects of Fusarium keratitis. Although Fusarium keratitis can be treated, if the eye infection is allowed to continue, it can lead to serious eye damage, including corneal ulcers and blindness.
Fusarium keratitis can be treated with antifungal medication if it is detected early, but may require a corneal transplant if it persists. Fusarium keratitis causes symptoms like pain, redness, excessive tearing, blurred vision, and eye discharge.
