Syracuse Professor Dr. Boyce Watkins appears again on "The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch," Monday at 10 pm to discuss hazing on college campuses and sites that exploit students.
Syracuse, NY (PRWEB) May 22, 2006 -- Outspoken Syracuse Professor Dr. Boyce Watkins is set to go head-to-head with Donny Deutsch over campus life and websites that sell pictures of students in compromising situations. Sites such as "badjocks.com" have recently emerged, showing pictures of college students, mostly female, under the influence of alcohol. One picture, for example, shows the members of Northwestern University's women's soccer team engaged in sexually explicit acts with a male stripper.
Dr. Watkins, an outspoken advocate for college students, objects to the presence of these websites. "In spite of what their creators say, these sites are not designed to educate students," says Watkins, author of 'Everything you ever wanted to know about college', "they are designed to exploit them."
Watkins does agree that college campus behavior is out of control. According to Watkins, the situation at Duke University shows that parents and faculty should openly question a campus culture that quietly encourages excessive alcohol consumption and wreckless behavior on the part of students. But he does not feel that sites which post pictures of such behavior are a good way to solve the problem.
"You can't forget that these students are young and every American has a reasonable expectation for privacy", says Watkins, who speaks to students about getting ready for college. "I don't think its right for a 30 year old mother to have to see pictures of herself on the internet doing things that she has come to regret over the years."
Dr. Watkins is the National Director of the Step Up and Go to College Program, which prepares high school students for the realities of college. He is also the author of "The Parental 411 - What every parent should know about their child in college". Watkins feels that parents do not do an adequate job of preparing their children for the realities of campus life. Instead, he feels that parents coddle their children, paying for their every need, which leads them into irresponsible behavior patterns.
"We need a revolution in parenting in this country", says Watkins. "We need parents to teach their children something called personal responsibility and stop giving them a license to wreck their lives. Rather than producing intelligent leaders of the future, we are producing a bunch of overweight playstation junkies who can't spell the word 'NBA'".
