Sydney, Australia (PRWEB) June 3, 2006 -- Duty of Care proudly present the International Pokies Impact Conference to be held at Eden on the Park, Melbourne. Featuring Tim Costello AO (CEO, World Vision) as after dinner speaker, Phyllis Vineberg (Gambling Activist, Canada), Michael O’Neil (Economist), political party leaders including Nick Xenophon MP, People Power and the Greens along with aboriginal community leaders and other eminent speakers.

The conference is being held prior to the Victorian state elections in which gaming machines have become a major election issue as a result of political lobbying, Tabcorp and Tattersalls license renewals and recent South Australian election results on the no pokies platform.

Barrister Tim Falkiner, researchers Linda Hancock, Dr James Doughney and Jennifer Borrell, CEO of the NZ Problem Gambling Foundation John Stansfield and Vice President of Duty of Care Gabriela Byrne, who is standing for election in the Victorian Upper House, are all regular speakers at this event and will present new views and information.

Government, industry and the community have the opportunity to gain an insight to the state of the nation in regard to gaming machines, the decisions that are currently being made by government, activists, researchers and the like, the recent push for local government to have more control over gaming machines in their local government area, and the long outstanding inadequacies relating to consumer rights and harm prevention.

Delegates are welcome to register online or by contacting Duty of Care.
