Akaza Research Partners with Northwestern and Semantic Bits, LLC to Develop Patient Study Calendar Module for the National Cancer Institute

Akaza Research has been awarded a contract by the National Cancer Institute to develop a Patient Study Calendar module for OpenClinica under the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Bioinformatics Grid (caBIG) initiative.

Cambridge, MA (PRWEB) June 10, 2006 -- Akaza Research, the developer of OpenClinica™, the leading open source clinical research software, announced today a partnership with Northwestern University and Semantic Bits, LLC to develop software for cancer clinical trials. The group has been awarded a contract by the National Cancer Institute to develop a Patient Study Calendar platform for the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Bioinformatics Grid (caBIG™) initiative.

The caBIG™ initiative makes critical tools and data accessible to cancer researchers worldwide to speed the development of innovative approaches for cancer prevention and treatment. The cutting-edge infrastructure developed by caBIG™ has broad utility in other disease areas as well.

The Patient Study Calendar module will be a caBIG “silver-level compliant” component that will function in harmony with other caBIG-compliant components. caBIG components are targeted for deployment in all NCI-designated cancer centers.

Key features of the Patient Study Calendar module include:

o    Patient screening and registration
o    Adaptable schedule definitions
o    Prospective forecasting of visit information
o    A framework for analyzing historical events
o    A security model suitable for multi-site protocols

The module will generate alerts for upcoming events and missed events, track and report dates of anticipated versus actual events, and report on patient accrual, missed events, and schedule deviations.

Types of research set to benefit from this module include disease prevention, therapeutic, observational, correlative, ancillary, screening, diagnostic, and biobanking studies.
