Boston, MA (PRWEB) June 27, 2006 -- From seed spitting to melon bowling, the big slice eating contest and melon decorating, watermelons will take over the Boston Common on Saturday, July 8 for the 2006 Life is good® Watermelon Festival. Thousands are expected to convene on Boston Common from 12:00 noon – 6:00 p.m. as Life is good celebrates summer with great live music, classic backyard food, and a colorful mix-of good time games and activities for adults and children alike. The festival will benefit Project Joy, a Boston-based non-profit organization that brings powerful, healing play to Greater Boston’s poorest children.

Throughout the day-long festival, more than 100 local “athletes” will compete for the coveted title of World’s Greatest Backyard Athlete, a pledge-driven competition to benefit Project Joy.

Sponsored by Fitcorp and FSN New England, this friendly, low-key competition features men and women grinning their way through a number of non-traditional events, including Frisbee toss, bocce, and watermelon seed spitting.

To compete, athletes must commit to raise at least $500 for Project Joy. Athletes can manage their fundraising simply and easily online. The single largest fundraiser will win a week’s vacation in Italy. “The Life is good Watermelon Festival will bring an old-time festival feel to Boston Common and the city of Boston. From Wiffle ball to live music, watermelon, crafts, great food and outdoor games, we promise a fun-filled day for both children and adults,” said Bert Jacobs, Life is Good co-founder and chief executive optimist. “The message of the festival is simple and uncomplicated, like the work done by Project Joy. We hope to raise significant money to help them continue to make a big difference in the lives of Boston’s poorest children.”

The Life is good Watermelon Festival will bring the nostalgia of an old-fashioned American picnic to the heart of Boston. The classic outdoor summer bash will feature great traditional games and activities including the Wiffle Ball Homerun Derby, watermelon decorating, tug o’ war, soccer hot shot, lacrosse toss, football fling, treasure hunts, magic shows, face painting and much more. The festival will be divided into three villages:

  • The Backyard Olympic Village, sponsored by Fitcorp, will be the site of the 2006 World’s Greatest Backyard Athlete Summer Games
  • Chillville, the perfect place for families seeking a mellow haven or simply a cool-down spot between physical activities. Chillville will feature arts and crafts, with melons, of course, professional storytelling and magic shows, cooperative parachute play games hosted by Project Joy, a variety of sample foods and drinks, and much more.
  • Sports Town, where you will find familiar games aplenty, including a football toss, home run derby, soccer, lacrosse, relay races, and much, much more. The festival will also feature great live music and classic backyard picnic food.

All money raised through national sales of a specially-designed 2006 Life is good Watermelon Festival tee shirt will benefit Project Joy. Merchandise sales, donations, and a portion of food sales at the festival will also benefit the Boston-based non-profit organization.

“The opportunity to work with Life is good and the 2006 Watermelon Festival is an incredible opportunity to educate people on the power of play,” said Steven Gross, executive director for Project Joy. “Many of us take play for granted. Yet it has amazing powers to help children who have suffered from or witnessed trauma in their lives, be it violence, poverty or natural disasters. With the support from Life is good, Project Joy will continue to provide strategically focused support services for those working with underprivileged preschoolers throughout greater Boston.”

Sponsors for the 2006 Life is good® Backyard Festival include Four Points® by Sheraton, Fitcorp, Citizens Bank, Roba Dolce, Dulcinea, Braver & Company, WBOS 92.9 FM, Boston.com, Improper Bostonian, and FSN New England.
