“Upon first glance, it’s nothing more than a scary story that uses religious symbolism to achieve its goal,” LeCara said. “However, there are many layers to the story depending on how deep you want to get.”
Taking place within the span of one week and set in Nazareth, Connecticut, soon-to-be father and college graduate Simon Free is distant just when his wife needs him most. Still grief stricken over the murder of his uncle and tormented by dreams he doesn’t understand, he seeks out the answer to his problems in the unlikeliest of places just as a series of bizarre events begin to unfold. The answer, however, will test him in ways he never dreamed as he finds himself among a group of reluctant heroes dealing with their own demons. But are these bizarre events the workings of a madman or part of a prophecy that will test the Church and, ultimately, Mankind?
According to LeCara, it’s also a very intimate story. "The protagonists of the novel are struggling with painful things that have happened in their past and that have affected them in a very profound way. They're even more troubled by the chaos and tumult they see around them, and this story is about how individuals try to process that which cannot be explained.”
Frustrated with the events that have occurred within the Church over the years, and inspired by his own unexplainable experiences, writing for LeCara was the only way to exorcise thoughts and ideas that gestated for years. “Had I written an op-ed piece or an article, it would have been too personal. By writing a story, the focus is solely on the characters.”
Ray LeCara, Jr. graduated from Eastern Connecticut State University in 1993 where he majored in English and minored in Theatre Arts while pursuing a concentration in Secondary Education. He will complete his Master’s in Philosophy this summer. An educator since 1993, he currently teaches writing and literature in a Connecticut middle school.
