Myrtle Beach Pavilion Farewell Season Brings Back the 'Good Ole Days' of 'Shaggin’ Around The Flagpole'

Shagging exhibitions and live broadcasts on WODR 105.3 radio to be presented each Wednesday in July.

Myrtle Beach, SC (PRWEB) July 2, 2006 -- Shagging dance exhibitions will be held each Wednesday in July from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Pavilion flagpole where generations of teenagers have gathered to dance. The exhibitions are part of the celebration of the Myrtle Beach Pavilion Farewell Season. As in decades past, the Attic’s vintage jukebox will be brought out and WODR 105.3 radio host “Fessa” John Hook will broadcast live from the flagpole area. A limited number of copies of his new book, “Shagging In The Carolinas” will be given away.

Throughout the month, various groups will stage shag demonstrations at the flagpole. Scheduled for July 12 is the Junior Society Of Shaggers (S.O.S.). More information about those additional exhibitions can be found at www.mbpavilion.com and www.mbpavilionmemories.com.

“We hope this brings back fond memories for many, as well as creates new memories for this generation,” said Tim Ruedy, vice president of operations for Burroughs & Chapin Company, Inc.’s Sports, Entertainment & Recreation Division. “In the past, Shaggers would hang out at the Pavilion, move the Jukebox from the Attic onto the beach and the good times would begin. We’ll be recreating those ‘good ole days’ one last time during July.”

Shagging was popularized in Myrtle Beach, S.C. in the thirties and forties and became a part of Southern culture. It is a swing-style dance often performed to Beach Music and features lots of fancy footwork with little movement from the waist up. The Shag became so popular that it is now the official state dance of South Carolina.
