Award-Winning artist/songwriter Katherine Schell becomes first artist in history to auction commercial rights on popular online marketplace

Chicago (PRWEB) July 10, 2006 -- Katherine Schell, a Chicago-based musician known for her soulful, eclectic and soothing rhythms and vocals, became the first artist to sell the rights to her music on eBay.

Beginning today, the 21-year-old singer/songwriter/pianist is holding an eBay auction for the exclusive one-year rights to her hit song "The Gravity Situation.” Under the terms of the auction, the purchaser will retain exclusive commercial rights to “The Gravity Situation” for one year.

While many emerging artists face intense competition in the commercial licensing market, Schell views this unconventional and innovative approach to licensing as the perfect way to gain industry exposure. The auction also benefits music executives, who typically spend thousands of dollars for the use of a single song.

“The Gravity Situation,” which has been described as a lush and airy soundtrack to Van Gogh's "Starry Night” is the perfect contemporary love song. Schell got the inspiration for the song while looking out the window of a plane and pondering the gift of life. Through her poetic style and with philosophical underpinnings, Schell hopes “The Gravity Situation” conveys a strong lyrical meaning – no matter how hard it is to overcome grief, there is always a glimpse of hope.

“The beauty of the song lies in the listener’s interpretation,” said Schell. “The Gravity Situation” is extremely versatile and can be used to convey a range of mixed emotions. Lyrically and musically, I aimed to portray the notion of hope.”

Schell, who has played piano since kindergarten, turned to songwriting while in high school to help cope with her younger brother’s leukemia diagnosis. The result was “Emptier Streets,” a compilation of life experiences that express anguish, hope, dreams and fears. Her lyrics are inspirational, straight-from-the-heart and full of meaning. She has already garnered many accolades for her work, including winning prestigious VH1 and Billboard songwriting awards.

The innovative eBay auction is not the first time Schell has used technology to promote her music. The artist also maintains heavily trafficked MySpace and Facebook accounts as well as a personal blog.
