Independent Commercial Producer Ron Steele Purchases Rights to Hit Song on eBay

Chicago-based I Dig Music founder to use Katherine Schell’s “The Gravity Situation” in upcoming project.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) July 20, 2006 -- Ron Steele, founder of the Chicago-based I Dig Music, has become the first independent commercial producer to purchase the rights to a song on eBay. The song, “The Gravity Situation,” was put on the popular e-commerce site by award-winning musician Katherine Schell. Steele beat out three other bidders, paying $660 for the exclusive one-year rights to the song.

Schell, a Chicago artist known for her soulful, eclectic and soothing rhythms and vocals, used eBay as an outlet to gain industry exposure in a cut-throat commercial licensing market. Steele, who often spends thousands of dollars for the single use of a song in a commercial, thought Schell’s innovative approach to licensing was beneficial for both parties.

“Many emerging artists face intense competition in this market,” said Steele. “When I heard about this eBay auction and listened to the piece, I realized that I could use Katherine’s music in one of our projects. We do many commercials and there’s always a need for unique and compelling music in my business.”

“The Gravity Situation,” on Schell’s debut CD “Emptier Streets,” has received critical acclaim from music critics, including a description as the airy soundtrack to Van Gogh's "Starry Night.” Schell, who views it as the perfect contemporary love song, got the inspiration for the song while looking out the window of a plane and pondering the gift of life.

Though Steele is undecided on how he will use “The Gravity Situation,” he said he is sure he will find the perfect project for the song within the next year. Steele also views his investment as being a good deed. “It’s a tough environment out there, so it’s also nice to be able to give an up-and-coming artist a helping hand,” he notes.
