The Firebird name is relatively new, but its core technology evolved over 20 years with the InterBase database, a version of which was released as open-source by Borland Software Corporation in 2000. Starting with that initial code set, Firebird was developed and is maintained by the Firebird Project, a group of volunteers devoted to what they call “the database for the new millennium.”
