New higher education think tank studies rising cost of college tuition.

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) August 2, 2006 -- Today the Center for College Affordability and Productivity (CCAP), a new higher education think tank, launched both its website, www.collegeaffordability.net, and blog, collegeaffordability.blogspot.com. Dr. Richard Vedder, a member of the Secretary of Education’s National Commission on the Future of Higher Education, serves as Director of CCAP. Vedder said that CCAP will study the skyrocketing cost of college tuition and stagnant productivity of higher education while offering market-based solutions to these growing problems. CCAP will also build upon Vedder’s earlier book, Going Broke by Degree: Why College Costs Too Much (AEI Press, 2004).

“It’s clear that college tuition is out of control. CCAP will examine this problem and other
critical, related issues facing higher education and try to offer market-based solutions to these problems,” Vedder said. “As a college professor, I have tremendous respect and admiration for higher education, but it has its flaws. CCAP will examine these defects in great detail and hopefully provide ‘tough love’ for colleges and universities. I hope that everyone visits our new website (www.collegeaffordability.net) and blog (collegeaffordability.blogspot.com) to learn more about this increasingly important issue.”

Vedder, who also serves as a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and a
Distinguished Professor of Economics at Ohio University, said that CCAP will address several specific questions including:

  • Why is rising tuition the fastest growing component in the Consumer Price Index?
  • Have federal student assistance programs contributed much, if anything, to greater student access given their impact on tuition?
  • How much is productivity falling in higher education –and why?
  • What can we learn from the for-profit university model and how far can it be expanded in promoting efficiency and access?
  • Why do over half of students entering four year colleges fail to graduate within four years—and what can we do about it?
  • Are we over-invested or underinvested in higher education—do too many unprepared students attend, or are we denying access to great numbers of able students for financial reasons?

Vedder also announced today the appointment of several CCAP staff members. Bryan O’Keefe, joins CCAP as Associate Director. CCAP has also hired Tony Caporale as a Senior Research Adviser, and Jonathan Leirer, James Woodward, Jacob Miller and Matthew Denhart as research assistants.

Dr. Vedder is available for media interviews on higher education issues. Specifically, Dr. Vedder can discuss college tuition increases, problems that students face when repaying loans, the declining productivity of universities, faculty salaries and unionization, and the growth of “non-traditional” universities such as online programs and for-profit universities.

To schedule a media interview with Dr. Vedder, please contact Bryan O’Keefe, CCAP Associate
Director, at 202-449-8484.
