There are millions of people in the UK in need of debt help, according to debt advice organisation The Debt Counsellors, with the latest statistics showing the problem of personal debt to be on the increase.

According to statistics released earlier this month by Credit Action, the total of personal debt in the UK has risen to £1,228 billion.
The average household debt in the UK is in the region of £49,696 and the average owed by every UK adult is approximately £26,334 (including mortgages). The fact that the latter figure has increased by £200 in just one month shows that there is a growing number of people in the UK who would benefit from debt help.
The Debt Counsellors also point out that this mounting personal debt is against a background of relative economic stability, so if the economy was to suffer a downturn then the situation would become far more serious.
