Simon Ourian, M.D. , a top authority on Botox, said the potent wrinkle fighting drug may also treat depression.
Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) September 18, 2006 -- Between 10 percent and 25 percent of people will develop a major depressive disorder at some point in their lives. A recent study publication suggested what many of doctor Ourian’s patients have been reporting might have been true all along.
"For many years my patients have been telling me receiving Botox makes them happier. Not just because they look happier, but because they truly feel uplifted," reports Doctor Ourian. Ourian says he was not surprised when he read the results of small scale study published by Doctor Finzi. "I am glad to hear someone else has observed similar results in their patients and published their findings," said doctor Ourian. According to Finzi the facial expression of emotion may play a causal role in the subjective experience of emotion. Based on this reasoning, researchers initiated a small open pilot trial to determine whether inhibiting the expression of facial frowning -- commonly associated with depression -- could help alleviate symptoms of depression.
Nine out of 10 patients who were treated with botulinum toxin A by having it injected into their glabellar frown lines, which are the lines between the eyebrows were no longer depressed two months after treatment. The one patient who was still depressed admitted having an improvement in mood. This was the patient with bipolar disorder.
All patients who participated in the study had an improvement in mood at their two-month evaluation. While botulinum toxin A appeared to be 90-percent effective in treating subjects for depression, only 10 subjects were evaluated. These are the first reported cases of depression treated with botulinum toxin A.
Ourian said he is very encouraged with the findings of this study and is preparing for a larger multi-center study on the treatment of depression with Botox.
