The Do's and Don'ts of Satellite Phones

Download this press release as an Adobe PDF document.

Find out how to get the most out of your satellite phone, and how to avoid the common and costly pitfalls.

Denver, CO (PRWEB) September 19, 2006 -- All Road Communications, http://www.allroadcommunications.com, the most helpful satellite phone rental company in America, wants to make sure you know how to get the most out of your Satellite Phone.

The Don'ts

Do not try calling an Iridium satellite phone directly, you will pay a minimum of $3.50 (Vonage) and as much as $12 per minute depending on your long distance or cellular provider

Do not take a Globalstar phone when hunting in South Africa or moving a boat across the Atlantic, it will not work, make sure you check coverage maps before renting or buying your satellite phone at http://www.allroadcommunications.com/coverage/

Do not try using your satellite phone indoors, or inside a vehicle, your reception will be poor to unavailable

Do not get your satellite phone wet or covered in sand, they are neither rugged nor waterproof

Do not buy or rent an Iridium data kit if you have a Mac, data kits are not Mac compatible

Do not try taking a satellite phone into counties like Oman or Jordan, they will take it from you at the border, and you will probably never see it again

The Do's

When calling an Iridium phone use the 2 stage dialing method, this is where you call an Arizona number, then put in the Iridium number you want to call and you will be connected. This way the call is billed to the Iridium customer at their per minute rate, and to you at your regular US long distance rate. (The 2 stage dialing number for Iridium is 480-768-2500)

Make sure to buy or rent a car kit if you want to get reception inside your car. For Iridium these cost around $200, for Globalstar around $1000

If you want to have a US number for your satellite phone then get a Globalstar, Iridium does not offer US numbers

Use text messages to communicate with Iridium and Globalstar satellite phones. They are free to for you to send and them to receive on both networks. Sending back an sms can only be done from an Iridium satellite phone and costs around $1 per message. Send your sms for free from http://www.allroadcommunications.com/rentals/sendtext.aspx

Buy or rent your satellite phone from a company which is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. 3 in the afternoon in Australia is not 3 in the afternoon in New York.

When renting a satellite phone for use in an active war zone make sure to get a prepaid SIM card. Satellite phones are targeted by terrorists as they are one of the only ways to communicate in secret. If your satellite phone rental has a post paid sim and it gets stolen you will be on the hook for the bill until you can get the phone cancelled, no matter how much is spent, and that may take time. Prepaid sim cards are useless once used up, and won't leave you with a $750,000 bill, like the one presented to the British Government when they had one of their sat phones snatched last year in Iraq.

All Road Communications rents Globalstar and Iridium sat phones from as low as $34.99 per week. All Road sells Globalstar Qualcomm GSP 1600 satellite phones from $699, and Iridium 9505A phones from $1395. All Road rents and sells Inmarsat broadband mobile access with BGAN Service worldwide, via Nera Worldpro 1000 units.

All Road Communications is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

All Road Communications offers next day delivery in the US and Western Europe via Fedex, DHL or UPS. All Road offers same day delivery to the same areas via Amtrak, Greyhound, Southwest, Delta or British Airways.
